About this Trek

The Chopta–Tungnath Trek is one of the most rewarding short treks in Uttarakhand. Often called the“Mini Switzerland of India”, Chopta is a serene valley wrapped in dense forests and guarded by snow-clad Himalayan peaks. The trail takes you to Tungnath Temple (12,073 ft)—the highest Shiva temple in the world—and further up toChandrashila Summit (13,123 ft), which unveils a majestic 360° panorama of the Himalayas, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks. This trek beautifully blendsspirituality, nature, and adventure, making it perfect for beginners, families, and seekers alike.

At the heart of this journey lies Tungnath Temple, one of the revered Panch Kedar shrines. Legend says the Pandavas built it to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings after the Mahabharata war, as his divine arms are believed to have manifested here. Pilgrims and trekkers alike experience an overwhelming sense of peace and divinity in its presence.

Rising above the temple is the Chandrashila Peak—literally “Moon Rock.” Mythology recalls Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana, while the Moon God performed penance upon this summit. At sunrise, when the snow peaks ignite in golden light, the experience feelsotherworldly, as though the mountains themselves radiate divine energy.

Down below, the Chopta Valley—a shepherd’s land for centuries—still whispers tales of sages and wanderers. Today, it thrives as part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, where spirituality, culture, and nature converge into a journey you will never forget.
